Martingale Collars are a great solution for dogs that tend to slip out of their collars or for owners looking for a bit more control without the harshness of a choke chain. What was originally a collar designed for sighthounds whose neck is wider than their head, the martingale collar is now popular among a variety of breeds and is frequently recommended by dog trainers. Hound Lines adjustable martingale collars are made with a nylon control loop.
Martingale collars are designed to fit the exact size of your dog’s neck when the collar is pulled closed. When fitted correctly, the collar will sit comfortably further down your dog’s neck when not in use. When the control loop is pulled, the rings on either side of the collar should pull next to each other, but should not touch. To determine the correct size for your dog, use a soft measuring tape and measure the smallest part of your dog’s neck behind the ears and also where a regular collar sits lower on the neck. You want a martingale collar that includes both of these measurements in it’s size range.
**Dogs should not be left unsupervised or in their crate when wearing a martingale collar.**
